Recognise the name? Absolute Thai Soho is the younger sister of Absolute Thai on Upper St Martin’s Lane. Happily, the quality of the food, décor and service are also high here on Dean Street. The moody oblong dining area is furnished with dark furniture and dinky Thai artefacts backlit by subdued multicoloured lighting. A monthly changing menu is similar to Absolute Thai’s with Bangkok lamb, King prawns river Kwai, and sau rong hai (chargrilled beef in chilli sauce) being best sellers. Suki yaki (aka ‘steam boat’ – a kind of DIY meal for sharers originating in Japan) is fun. Good salads. The international wine list is worth a look: each wine has been chosen to bring out the best in Thai food.

Parties of 60 to a hundred are offered exclusive use of a well-proportioned basement private room with a karaoke screen and sound system at one end, and a neat bar and DJ booth at the other. Tables and chairs can be arranged to suit your event. The slate-effect floor serves well as a dance floor. More formal than the basement, the main restaurant also seats 60. A la carte, reduced a la carte, set, canapé and buffet menus are served. The spacious modern bar is often used for convenient pre and post meal drinks, otherwise you have Soho’s multitude of bars at your doorstep. Smoking in the bar only. Open seven days a week; until 2am Fridays and Saturdays.
