One of many reasons to envy Chelsea-ites is the praiseworthy Pig's Ear off the King's Road. A cosy, high-ceilinged bistro-style boozer serving fine beer and high-quality snacks (oysters, charcuterie, salads) on the one hand, it is also home to a dream of a dining room – wood panelled, candlelit, mirrored, filled with quirky paraphernalia, and staffed with polite, caring staff. The decadent, daily changing menu is equally faultless. Superior starters might include some robust seared foie gras, or caramelised smoked eel. Deeply satisfying mains meanwhile may be roast rump of lamb with white beans, tomatoes and rosemary. Comfortingly classic desserts such as rice pudding and apricots are as good as the ones your ma made. Strong, good value wine list. The perfect pub?

The serene first floor dining room of The Pig's Ear can be hired for business lunches, Christmas parties, birthdays and get-togethers of ten to 35 people seated, or 40 to 60 reception-style. For something cosier, there's the Blue Room with space for 20 seated, or 30 standing. Up to eight of you can dine a la carte, or 35 from the reduced a la carte menu. The French-style, buzzy bar downstairs can be used for pre and post meal drinks. While smoking isn't allowed in the dining room, it is in the bar. Disabled access to the bar only. Closed Mondays.
